Living in France
Moving to France to pursue an education is both an enriching and transformative experience. For international students at Hexagone Aviation School, this journey goes far beyond education: it offers the opportunity to discover a rich culture and a unique way of life, and to immerse oneself in a modern, dynamic society that is open to the world.
Living in France means adapting to a new daily routine. It means discovering new customs, a new language, cultural references, and a different pace of life. It also means learning to feel at home in a new environment, while holding on to your identity and sense of belonging.
At Hexagone Aviation School, we support our students every step of the way as they settle in. Our goal is to help you adjust, make your experience enjoyable, and allow you to focus fully on your training.
France is a country of diversity, high standards, and opportunities. With curiosity, an open mind, and support, your experience in France will serve as a springboard for your personal and professional future.
Accommodation: The First Step
Towards Independence
Finding housing is often one of the initial challenges to address. As an international student, several options are available to you: private or public student residences, shared accommodation, or renting a studio or a room in a private home. Prices vary depending on the location, but in the Beauvais region, rents generally remain affordable compared to major metropolitan areas.
As soon as you move in, our team will guide you through the necessary steps: signing a lease, paying a security deposit, purchasing home insurance, and setting up your electricity and internet service. We’ll also help you understand your rights and responsibilities as a tenant.
It is also possible to benefit from housing assistance offered by the French State (such as APL or other CAF schemes). Here again, we are by your side to help you prepare the required applications.
Effortless daily travel
In France, public transportation is well-developed. In Beauvais and its surrounding areas, bus lines serve the main districts, train stations, and business areas. A student subscription card allows for reduced fares.
For journeys to Paris or other cities, regular trains and regional coach services are available. Furthermore, Beauvais has an international airport, a significant advantage for international students or those wishing to travel affordably.
Cycling is also an increasingly popular option. Numerous cycle paths allow for free and safe movement. It is an economical, ecological, and pleasant way to explore the city.
An accessible healthcare system
France has a healthcare system renowned for its quality and accessibility. As an international student, you can receive medical care through your enrollment in the French Social Security system. This process, which is mandatory and free for non-European students, allows for the reimbursement of a portion of your healthcare expenses, including doctor’s visits, medications, tests, and examinations.
To supplement this coverage, we strongly recommend purchasing supplemental health insurance (mutuelle). This coverage helps cover all or part of the costs you are responsible for. There are many plans tailored to international students available at affordable rates.
On a day-to-day basis, accessing healthcare is quick and easy. General practitioners, specialists, and pharmacies are all easily accessible nearby. In case of an emergency, you can call 15 (SAMU) or 112, the European emergency number.
Near Hexagone Aviation School, you’ll also find several medical offices, a hospital, and mental health facilities, ensuring you receive comprehensive support throughout your training.
Our priority: to help you study with peace of mind, knowing you have quick and efficient access to medical care if needed.
Eat well, live well
Cuisine plays a central role in French culture. Beyond the clichés about bread, cheese, and croissants, living in France means discovering a diverse culinary tradition, cooking with fresh ingredients, and making every meal a time for sharing and togetherness.
Supermarkets, farmers’ markets, and local shops offer a wide selection of products to suit every budget. You’ll also easily find options tailored to your dietary needs—vegetarian, vegan, halal, or kosher—so that everyone can stick to their habits and preferences.
Eating a healthy, balanced diet plays a key role in your daily well-being, especially during your training. That’s why Hexagone Aviation School points you toward great local spots, as well as handy apps to help you manage your budget, discover simple recipes, or find restaurants that suit your tastes.
Eating well also means getting the most out of your time in France and fully enjoying your daily life as a student.
Understanding social norms
Living in France means getting used to certain customs that may seem surprising at first. Punctuality, using the formal “vous” in formal settings, the importance of critical thinking, and the role of debate in conversations are all social norms that shape daily life.
This doesn't mean you have to change who you are, but understanding these rules will make it easier for you to interact with other students, teachers, shopkeepers, or government officials.
Politeness, punctuality, active listening, and mutual respect are deeply ingrained values in French society. Freedom of opinion and expression is also protected, within the framework of the republican and secular state, providing an open and stimulating environment for learning and fully enjoying your experience.
Leisure, culture, and exploration
France offers an exceptional cultural richness. Every city, every region, and every neighborhood is brimming with places to explore: museums, monuments, shows, festivals, movies, exhibitions… and often at reduced rates or free of charge for students.
In Beauvais, you can admire the famous Saint-Pierre Cathedral, attend concerts, take part in local events, or simply stroll through the narrow streets of the city center. And if you’d like to explore further, Paris is less than 80 minutes away, with its renowned museums, bookstores, theaters, and traditional cafés.
Community life is also very active. Joining a club, a project, or a local initiative is a great way to meet new people, practice French, and get involved in the community.
Working during your studies
In France, international students can work up to 964 hours per year, or about 20 hours per week. This is a great opportunity to make some extra money, become more independent, and gain some initial work experience.
Whether through a part-time job, an internship, or a short-term assignment, it is possible to balance work and studies. Hexagone Aviation School supports you every step of the way: understanding your rights, preparing your application materials, writing your resume in French, and identifying opportunities that match your profile.
This professional experience also gives you insight into how the French job market works: its norms, expectations, and opportunities. For those who wish to settle there permanently, it is a valuable first step toward professional integration.
Feeling at Home
Living in France involves learning to establish your own balance. Amidst studies, social life, rest, administrative procedures, new experiences, and challenges, it is crucial to find a personal rhythm that suits your needs.
Hexagone Aviation School does more than just teach you how to fly. Our mission is also to provide you with personal support throughout this important stage of your life. We take a holistic approach to each student, considering their individual needs, goals, and aspirations.
