Language Assistance and Cultural Adaptation
Supporting our international students
in mastering French and understanding
the local culture
Settling into a foreign country is about more than just learning the language. You also need to understand social norms and everyday customs, and be able to interact with others and build relationships.
At Hexagone Aviation School, we help our students adapt culturally and socially, as this contributes to their academic and personal success.
Our school welcomes students from all over the world, and we know that arriving in a new environment can be challenging: the language, different customs, humor, or local references…
To facilitate this transition, we offer comprehensive language and cultural support to help each student settle in, learn, and thrive in France.
The French language:
a key integration tool
Even though some courses at Hexagone Aviation School are taught in English, proficiency in French is still essential for living and studying comfortably in France: dealing with administrative procedures, communicating with the teaching staff, social life… speaking French makes everything easier.
For non-French-speaking students, we offer personalized language support. Upon admission, a placement test helps us determine a tailored program:
- Online courses
- In-person sessions in small groups
- Support from French-speaking pairs
- Referral to local specialized facilities
The goal is to develop written and oral skills through a practical approach: everyday vocabulary, real-life situations, and useful phrases for administrative tasks, medical appointments, social interactions, and professional settings.
Linguistic support
in the academic sphere
Beyond everyday French, some students may struggle with technical vocabulary, coursework, or the requirements of certain tests.
To address this, Hexagone Aviation School offers language support tailored to the course content:
- Explanation of complex terms
- Translation or rephrasing of concepts and instructions
- Help with understanding course materials and preparing for exams
This support is provided by the teaching staff, as well as by alumni and instructors trained to mentor students.
Our goal is to enable every student to make progress without language barriers, while developing independence, active listening skills, and confidence in speaking.
Familiarization with French Culture
Cultural adaptation is a fundamental aspect of integration. It involves not only knowing the rules but also understanding values, expected behaviors, and implicit references. This encompasses simple elements—such as greeting customs, requesting assistance, or participating in a class—as well as more profound aspects: the relationship with authority, time management, non-verbal communication, dietary habits, and local traditions.
At Hexagone, we believe that this adaptation is built progressively through experience, observation, and dialogue. We encourage every student to ask questions, express their doubts, and compare their own cultural benchmarks with those of the host country.
To facilitate this process, we offer intercultural workshops at the beginning of the academic year, enabling students to discover the specificities of French culture while also sharing those of their home countries. These exchange sessions, conducted in a friendly and supportive atmosphere, help to defuse misunderstandings, foster curiosity, and establish a dynamic of mutual respect.
A Multicultural and Inclusive Environment
Our campus is a place where diverse backgrounds, languages, cultures, and aspirations converge. This diversity is a strength. It enriches learning, fosters exchanges, and enables everyone to broaden their perspective on the world. We cultivate this richness by ensuring an inclusive environment where every student feels welcomed and recognized.
Our teams are sensitized to cultural differences, the plurality of expression modes, and the necessity of adapting to the varied profiles of our students. We avoid hasty judgments and stereotypes, promoting an attitude of openness, dialogue, and understanding.
Every student can rely on the Buddy System implemented by the school, which pairs a French-speaking or more experienced student with a newcomer. This pairing is a valuable resource for understanding local life, asking questions about customs, practicing the language in an informal setting, and building connections beyond the classroom.
Available Resources to Support Adaptation
Hexagone provides its students with a range of practical resources to support their linguistic and cultural adaptation: multilingual guides, thematic lexicons, explanatory videos, online learning platforms, directories of local organizations, contacts for intercultural associations, etc.
We also inform students about regional cultural events, festivals, organized outings, and free or community-based activities to foster immersion and discovery.
Students can also register for educational or cultural outings offered by the school: museum visits, excursions to French cities, participation in traditional festivals, cooking workshops, etc. These opportunities allow for alternative learning, foster integration into local life, and cultivate a sense of belonging.
Human
and Individualized Support
We recognize that each student has their own pace of adaptation. Some will feel comfortable very quickly, while others will require more time or support. Therefore, we offer individualized support, founded on active listening, respect, and trust.
Our teams remain available throughout the year to answer questions, propose solutions, or simply engage in discussion. We remain vigilant for signs of isolation or distress and encourage students to express their needs without judgment.
Our objective is clear: for every international student to feel at home within Hexagone and in France. This means not forgetting their origins, but feeling legitimate, supported, and valued throughout their journey.
Conclusion
Embracing Diversity as a Strength
At Hexagone Aviation School, we deeply believe that language acquisition and the discovery of local culture are not constraints, but opportunities. Opportunities to better understand the world, gain autonomy, and forge strong connections.
Our mission is to support this transition with benevolence, professionalism, and commitment, so that every international student who enters our school feels fully welcomed, respected, and ready to write a new chapter of their life, here in France.
