In-person PPL(A) Theoretical Training

Lay the solid foundations for your future as a pilot.

The PPL(A) theoretical training represents the first genuine step into the world of light aviation. More than just a course, it provides the fundamental knowledge to understand, anticipate, and master all essential elements of flight. Whether your objective is to fly for leisure, share unique moments with loved ones, or simply explore the skies with complete freedom, this training is your starting point.

Recognized throughout Europe, the PPL(A) theoretical course covers 9 EASA regulatory subjects that provide all the essential knowledge for safe flight: principles of flight, meteorology, navigation, operational procedures, regulations, and more. These are the keys to becoming a confident and autonomous private pilot.

At Hexagone Aviation School, we prioritize clear, structured, and personalized instruction delivered in-person, to offer you a motivating learning environment and guided progression. Our instructors will guide you step-by-step to ensure your comprehension, develop your skills, and maximize your chances of success in the examination.

Methodology, discipline, and best practices for private pilots.

The PPL(A) theoretical training constitutes the essential knowledge foundation for any private pilot. Its objective is to impart all the aeronautical, technical, and regulatory concepts necessary for safe and autonomous flight in light aviation.

Specifically, upon completion of the training, you will be able to:

Master the 9 regulatory subjects defined by EASA (navigation, meteorology, regulations, principles of flight, communications, etc.),
Understand the fundamental principles of aircraft operation, from its performance characteristics to the limitations that must be respected,
Analyze flight situations to make safe and appropriate decisions,
Interpret meteorological data and anticipate its impact on your flight,
Apply air regulations and essential piloting procedures in controlled and uncontrolled airspace,
Independently prepare a flight, from planning to real-time management,
• Develop methodological rigor and a strong safety culture, which are indispensable for recreational aviation.

Our objective is clear: to enable you to approach your practical training confidently, equipped with reliable, comprehensive, and recognized theoretical knowledge, so you can fly with assurance from your very first circuits.

The PPL(A) is primarily a license intended for those who wish to fly for leisure, travel, share flights with loved ones, and enjoy the freedom of light aviation. The theoretical training's main objective is therefore to provide you with all the necessary skills to operate safely within a strictly non-commercial context.

However, the PPL(A) also represents the first stage of a modular training pathway for those who eventually envision a career in aviation. Once the license is obtained, it becomes possible to pursue higher qualifications and licenses: Night Rating, CPL(A), IR(A), MEP, ATPL theoretical, and ultimately the complete pathway to become a professional or airline pilot.

Specifically, this training aims to:

• Prepare you to fully exercise the privileges of a private pilot,
• Develop the necessary skills for autonomous flight in recreational aviation,
• Provide you with a solid theoretical foundation to confidently approach practical training,
• Facilitate, if desired, progression towards a modular professional curriculum,
• Instill from the outset a safety culture, piloting discipline, and technical knowledge useful throughout an aeronautical journey, whether recreational or professional.

The objective: to make you a capable, responsible, and autonomous private pilot — and to offer you the possibility to advance further should you choose to transform your passion into a career.

The PPL(A) theoretical training is designed for anyone wishing to discover piloting and acquire the necessary knowledge to become a private airplane pilot. It is open to a diverse audience, motivated by a passion for flight and the desire to operate safely in light aviation.

It is particularly relevant for:

• Individuals wishing to fly for leisure and engage in recreational aviation,
• Future pilots seeking to obtain their first license and access practical training,
• Aviation enthusiasts desiring to understand aircraft operation, meteorology, navigation, or regulations,
• Candidates considering, in the medium or long term, to pursue a modular professional curriculum (CPL, IR, ATPL theoretical, etc.),
• Young individuals who wish to discover piloting before committing to a more advanced aeronautical career path.

The training is for all those seeking structured instruction, supervised by professionals, within a secure and motivating environment — whether the objective is discovery, autonomy, or future skill advancement towards other qualifications.

The PPL(A) theoretical training is accessible without prior aviation experience. It has been designed to allow everyone to discover piloting, regardless of their starting level.

To enroll in the training:

No prior aeronautical experience is required,
Be at least 15 years old at the start of the training (and 16 years old to perform the first solo flight during the practical phase),
Possess genuine motivation to learn, study, and progress within a structured framework,
• Have a good comprehension of French (courses and examinations are conducted in French).

Although not mandatory to begin the theoretical part, we strongly recommend undergoing a Class 2 medical examination with an approved medical examiner before the start of the training.
This step allows you to validate medical fitness for flying and ensures that nothing will delay your entry into practical training once the theoretical component is obtained.

Before the start of the training, an orientation interview is conducted to better understand your project, expectations, and starting level.
This assessment allows us to tailor your support and ensure coherent progression throughout your journey.

This discussion aims to:

• Identify your motivations: recreational aviation, introduction to piloting, or progression towards a modular course…
• Assess your availability, personal organization, and capacity to maintain a consistent learning pace,
• Answer your questions regarding theoretical training, the PPL(A) examination, and the transition to the practical phase,
• Ensure you have all the necessary resources to commence training under optimal conditions.

This assessment is neither a test nor a selection; its purpose is to personalize your support and ensure that the training perfectly aligns with your aviation project, whether recreational or geared towards progression to other licenses.

Official PPL(A) examinations are conducted at DGAC examination centers in France, according to the schedule defined by the authority. Hexagone Aviation School assists students with:

  • appointment scheduling,
  • the compilation of examination application files,
  • logistical and psychological preparation for the examination.
Training Certification and Course Completion Certificate

Training Certification and Course Completion Certificate

Upon completion of the PPL(A) training, each student receives a personalized certificate of completion, issued by Hexagone Aviation School. This document specifies the nature and duration of the training undertaken, and confirms that all mandatory modules have been completed in accordance with the requirements of the EASA-defined PPL theoretical syllabus. This certificate serves as an official validation of the training and attests that the candidate is now eligible to sit for the PPL(A) theoretical examinations organized by the DGAC. It represents a crucial step in the journey towards obtaining a pilot license.

EASA-recognized and compliant training

The PPL(A) theoretical course is not registered with the RNCP, as it falls directly under European Part-FCL / EASA regulations.
However, its content is fully compliant with European standards and meets all official requirements for obtaining the Private Pilot License (Aeroplane).

It constitutes the essential regulatory foundation for progressing towards all light aviation or modular licenses and ratings.

Career Prospects

The PPL(A) allows you to fly an aircraft under VFR, carry passengers, and enjoy light aviation for leisure, travel, and exploration.

It provides access to numerous aeronautical activities:
• Local flights and VFR navigation
• Travel and recreational flights
• Flights within flying clubs
• Skill enhancement, safety, continuous progression

It also opens the doors to a professional career path.

Further Training Progression

Upon completion of the PPL(A) theoretical training, students naturally progress to practical training, an essential step to obtain their Private Pilot License and complete their first solo flights. Once the license is acquired, several avenues for progression become available: the Night Rating for night flying, the FCL.055 to master aviation English, or additional ratings such as the IR(A), the MEP, or even the ATPL(A) theoretical for those aiming for a modular professional pathway. At Hexagone Aviation School, we support you in these choices through personalized guidance, to build a coherent aeronautical trajectory, whether it is dedicated to leisure or oriented towards a future career.
